Communities Cymru

Communities Cymru is a pilot project from Culturenet Cymru. We are working alongside local community groups to enable them to create stimulating digital content from local projects. The content created will be displayed on our website for everyone to enjoy. The first of these projects - The Llandrindod Wells Portraits - can be viewed from June 24th 2004 at www.communitiescymru.com

The project is driven by community need as it relies on groups coming forward with information about interesting projects that are taking place in their community. These suggestions will be evaluated and if successful could become part of an expanded Communities Cymru program. We believe that asking community groups to come forward with their ideas will generate fresh and inventive content which will be of real interest to a wider audience. We are welcoming ideas for digital content from all recognised community groups. These could include schools, youth clubs, local history societies, sports clubs etc.

Digital content is an increasingly popular area; it is created through a process of digitisation, which creates a digital copy of an original. This is usually done through scanning or digital photography. Video clips and sound recordings can also be digitised. These digital files can be displayed on a website for all to see. Digitisation projects also offer real benefits to the community, as they are excellent ways of:

  • Documenting local heritage
  • Encouraging tourism
  • Sharing heritage with a wider audience
  • Preserving cultural identity
  • Encouraging participation from all members of the community

Communities will be encouraged to play an active part in the projects with Culturenet Cymru acting in a facilitating and advisory role. Depending on the project we will be able to offer a variety of help to enable the group to document its project and get the work on the web for the world to see. Help available could include, practical advice and training on photography and scanning, loan of equipment and self-help manuals for your group to keep.
